Came across one of my former instructors on the internet, finding one led me to search out the other which in turn came up with a former, now high ranking student of there's . I did not have any contact with any of them for over twenty five years. I was shocked to see that all were very overweight and calling themselves Grand masters. ( I must point out that in the martial arts world these grand master titles are recognized) Upon seeing my former portly instructors i remembered conversations we had about thirty years ago were the titles master and fat instructors were severely condemned. It seems that people not only change physically but principles of yesteryear do as well. It does not really matter if they can still whip my butt or not. What matters is respect for yourself. My former instructors are about two years older than me but old age is no excuse for becoming fat, especially if you are still teaching martial arts as my former instructors are . I have always disliked the titles master and grand master and any form of grading system. When once asked if he had any belts in martial arts Bruce lee replied only the one that is holding up my pants. Whether self awarded or by a martial arts organization the titles master or grand master to me seem very egotistical. Because of the human mindset anybody calling themselves grand master whether 19 or 90 is going to look very foolish if a street fighter puts you in hospital . I don't like the words Sifu, Sensie or any of the other ego tripping titles in the martial arts. To the people who train with me i am just Mike and the day i get fat and can not do 50 strict no cheating push ups is the day i will retire from teaching martial arts. Mike Garner
